Sinnloser freier Wille

Free will: The concept that some aspect or aspects of an agent’s conscious or unconscious is completely independent of that agent’s environment, including their internal environment.

In other words, someone with free will is more than just “chemicals firing in their brain.” Some aspect of their personality or decision-making ability is not determined by physical reality. Depending on who you ask, that aspect has variably been defined as choice, personality, intelligence, and many other concepts. However, I think that this definition captures the general essentials of the idea, at least enough to talk about it.

Did you notice that my definition of free will makes no sense? I tried my very best to make sense, because I do not want to be accused of setting up a straw man. However, no matter how you try, it is impossible to define free will without resorting to the supernatural — something outside of reality. I challenge anyone to do better. Even if they can make a better-sounding definition of free will, no one can make it make any more sense.

This, then, is the crux of the argument: that free will cannot exist, because it relies on a supernatural mechanism.1
