Ich habe eine Schwäche für die Releases aus dem Jedi Mind Tricks-Umfeld. Doap Nixons Sour Diesel ist genau so ein Release.
Zwar habe ich keinen Schimmer, wie Sour Diesel schmeckt (”Beyond the citrus end of the pot palate spectrum lies a sour lemon tang tending toward the heay pungency of an open drum of diesel.”1 ), einerseits, weil ich mit Cannabis nichts am Hut habe, andererseits, weil es nicht zu meinen liebsten Beschäftigungen zählt, an Dieselfässern schnüffeln zu gehen. Vorliegende Platte ist aber fresh to death. Sie besitzt die rauhe, grimmige Schärfe von allen Jedi Mind Trick-Releases, aber nahezu (Warning Shot ist von vibrierenden E-Gitarren geprägt.) ohne den eingeflochtenen Metal, der etliche ihrer Platten prägt. (Besonders stark zu spüren bei Ill Bill.) Das Pendel schwingt bei Doap Nixon eher wieder in die Richtung des klassischen Hip Hop.
Sour Diesel ist wohl das grosse Release dieses Sommers, Überraschungen ausgenommen.

Doper Stoff von Reks, der mit Features von Termanology und Consequence und Produzenten wie Statik Selektah und Blaze P. einen exzellenten Rahmen hat, um seine Botschaft aus Parket zu spitten. Say Goodnight ist dank DJ Premiers Beats ein wahres Meisterstück des eher klassischen, laid back Hip Hop geworden. Nebst Say Goodnight sollte man - steht man im Plattengeschäft vor den Regalen und kann sich nicht entscheiden, ob man Grey Hairs jetzt möchte oder nicht - auch Premoition unbedingt mal anspielen. Schon allein wegen dem extrem gechillten kleinen Chorus.
Und jetzt - geht raus spielen, es ist nicht alle Tage derart berauschend sonnig wie heute.

Man könnte beinahe meinen, mit Skillz drittem Album The Million Dollar Backpack sei ein Lupe Fiasco-Klon am Horizont aufgetaucht. Die Ähnlichkeit unten stehenden Covers mit dem von Lupes Food & Liquor ist frappant. Vergleicht man die beiden Alben jedoch, nicht Artwork mit Artwork also, sondern Musik mit Musik, dann schwindet die Ähnlichkeit rasch. Ähnlichkeit mit Kanye West, der ebenfalls als Backpack-Rapper gilt, sucht man ebenfalls vergeblich.
Ist das nun schlecht oder gut?
Ob Ähnlichkeit vorhanden ist oder nicht, ist eine bedeutungslose Frage. Lieber ein gutes Original als eine schlechte Kopie, wie man so schön sagt. Auf unsere Situation übertragen: Lieber eigenständigen guten Hip Hop von Skillz als ein halbherziger Versuch, Lupe zu kopieren.
The Million Dollar Backpack bietet zweifelsohne guten, saftigen Hip Hop. Laid back. Skillz schafft es jedoch nicht neue Impulse in das Spielfeld des Hip Hop zu bringen. Hold Tight bildet die löbliche Ausnahme. Eine Fusion zwischen Jazz und Rap. Zwei grossartige Musikstile, die jedoch nahezu immer getrennte Wege gehen. Leider.
